Even though pool water is a strong antibacterial, it only kills surface bugs. So a chunk of something that hasn't been broken down still contains live and potentially pathogenic bugs. If your healing skin becomes opened (easy with kicking), and since it's already compromised from the burn, if the chunk becomes imbedded there .... You don't want to be on antibiotics while pregnant.

RE: Swimming after a second-degree burn?

I burned my hand about 3 months ago. I'm actually pregnant on top of this injury so I'm not in high training mode right now anyway -- just keeping healthy. But with how quickly I'm slowing down and how amazing being in the water feels, I'm extra bummed to have to sit out. It's probably the right thing to do though. My team will still be there in a week I suppose, and no one cares if the pregnant lady gets even slower! Thanks for the good reminder!

RE: Swimming after a second-degree burn?

The smaller blister is less than dime-sized. The larger one is about an inch long but only about a quarter inch wide. So far the blisters are intact, which I think is good?

RE: Swimming after a second-degree burn?

OH, I wouldn't go in the water with a burn. Every time I have any sort of burn the water seems to make it feel a whole lot worse than it actually is. I'd sit it out for a week just to be on the safe side. Sure, you'll have to work hard to get back on track, but at least you'll heal okay.

RE: Swimming after a second-degree burn?

How much skin was exposed to heat (dime sized, or like several square inches)?
