I'm pretty excited because i just finished a set of 20 x 100 on 1:40 and all my reps came in around 1:29-1:31; the last two were in 1:28 and 1:27

RE: 1650: pacing question

I am a bit late with the congrats, but nice swim!

RE: 1650: pacing question

Great swim! I started off with :37 off the blocks and settled in right at :45-:46 per 50 the whole time; managed sub :45 pace per 50 in my last 150 yards. Both the 500 and 1000 splits were PRs for me as well.

RE: 1650: pacing question

Great swim! I listed 25:20 as my seed time and went 25:05 in the 1650 at state, about a 1:31/100 pace (faster pace than the 500 I swam 2.5 months ago in my first meet of the year)... even after dropping 10 seconds off my 400 IM PR and 8 secs off my 100 BK PR.

Pretty much right in line with what you guys were predicting. Thanks!

RE: 1650: pacing question

Here's a set my masters coach says will approximate your race 1650 time. I have zero empirical evidence that it works for me, b/c I don't swim 1650s voluntarily! But I know others who seem to think it works.
Swim the following 1650 hard broken as follows and subtract 1:40:
11 lengths, rest :15
10, rest :15
9, rest :15
8, rest :10
7, rest :10
6, rest :10
5, rest :10
4, rest :05
3, rest :05
2, rest :05

A 1:30 pace brings my 1650 in at 24:45 and 1:32 at 25:20. I'll probably go with the conservative time for my seed, but I'm really going to try to break 25... I didn't know I was that close, since I was on a plateau for about a year (~29:00 for the mile). Hope to keep the momentum going through the summer! Thanks for the feedback!

RE: 1650: pacing question

I used to do a set where I'd swim 100s on the 1:30 and try to hold my 1650 pace. My goal was around 1:02-1:03, so I was getting more rest than you did. I hit my goal pace when I swam the 1650 tapered. Based on this you should definitely be able to hold a 1:30 pace in a race, I would suspect.

RE: 1650: pacing question

I would go with the mid 25 as your entry time.

RE: 1650: pacing question

I would say yes and I'd give them the faster seed time. 20 x 100 is always a very good indicator for me.
As you were getting 10-11 seconds rest, you might try the set on 1:35 next time. Threshold sets should give you :05-:10 rest per 100, so that would get you a slightly better threshold workout (I think you can probably make that interval). :D
