I am not bragging or boasting but I find it fascinating how quickly the body can adapt to adding distance in such a short time. For years I wanted to get back into swimming but felt too out of shape

RE: 1 month update

The first 2-3 workouts I went to this kid was there with his dad and the kid was obviously a HS swimmer and was like 6'0 140lbs and no fat. Doing tons of yardage and making me feel fat and out of shape. I asked his dad what events his son does... he's like... Oh well right now he's the #1 rated 500 free in the state and he's a jr.... and this is his 2nd workout of the day... and then proceeds to tell me his 7th grade son came in on a day off from school to do 100x100's... just cause he was bored... No wonder these kids have no fat on them!

RE: 1 month update

I post this not because I am impressed with how far I have come in a short amount of time but for any of those people out there who are like me and wondering if they can get back into swimming. For me I've gotten the competitive urge back. I look at the guys in lanes next to me, usually HS swimmers who are shredded, and i find myself timing them and then comparing what they do to how I do. I find myself wanting to ask them to race... just to appease an old man and humble me.

Keep it up, sir. I find I always try to beat the HS guys when they are out there swimming practices. Its fun. I can usually top them in practice pretty easily... just not for an extended period of time. Repeatability is the biggest difference I've found from my youth to now. Doesn't feel like i lost alot of speed or strength at all.

RE: 1 month update

My swim career ended after we started Y basketball at about age 9-10 for me. Atleast I ended up w 2 12th place finishes in relays at state! ;)

I have yet to see anyone tell people to get off the blocks... but when I'm there the teams are practicing and they reserve the 2 last lanes for lap swim... so I don't think the coaches really care.

RE: 1 month update

I went through a similar thing back in September. Started swimming regular for the first time since high school back in 1985. (However I did do a small amount of swimming during the past few summers, but nothing more than a few laps here and there.) Since September I trained for a meet that was being held less than 5 miles from my house. It was only 2 months that I had to prepare, but I couldn't pass it up since it was so close to home. Did better than I expected probably due to all the adrenaline\nerves. I didn't have any seed times and the entry form would not accept "NT". All I had to go off of was times I did in practice during the middle of a workout. Also my local "Y" doesn't allow you to go off the blocks. My ballpark guesstimate placed me in the slowest heats, and I'm sure people thought that I was sandbagging. Nope, just clueless. Also I was very relieved to find out that practice starts from the blocks were allowed during warm-ups. Of course I didn't know that until I got there.

I still have a ways to go before I get back to my high school times, but it is a goal that I feel is attainable. I only wish that I jumped back into swimming sooner, hopefully some reluctant ex-swimmer reading this will be encouraged to make the same leap.
