If you want to swim fast, you need to kick fast.
With a board, without a board,
With fins, without fins.
While swimming or just kicking.

Consider improving your kick.

We need speed.

I pretty much always bilateral breathe, except when racing, so in my case that's not it. Good idea, though. Maybe the reverse is true for me? This is an incredible performance!
In perspective and think of where I would be by the 5 min mark, about 250 yd's, and about that point my legs would lock up and I would have to crawl on the deck into the locker room.

My natural kick is a two-beat crossover kick. When I try to increase my kick while swimming freestyle, it feels very unnatural but I know that a stronger kick would serve me well on shorter events. I trudge through kick sets but I don't feel like it translates to my swimming except in backstroke. How might I get used to kicking more while swimming? Maybe in awhile you can try an interval. Body position is key in kick. I developed better body positon by using snorkel and floating on my back for several minutes at a time and trying to keep very still and raise my toes out of the water. Same thing on my stomach but try to get heels slightly out of the water. I overcame some hurdles which included two sprained ankles, one injured shoulder, one bike wreck and a weeks vacation (with no pool). I've been doing a lot of kicking with my arms at my side working all strokes with and without fins. It really helps with body position IMHO. I've also done a lot of kicking on my sides (not with a snorkel) and working on hip rotation. You can make any set into a kick set.

RE: The Kicking Lane

Recovering from labrum surgery. Back in the pool for a week now kicking in the 'executive' lane, aka the gutter lane. No board and can only do half streamline with my good arm, but can manage flip turns. One thing I look forward to is being able to 'stroke' into the wall again.....which is something I haven't been able to do in a long time due to the bum shoulder. All my teammates would kill me on those stroking turns......no fair!!!!

Last nights workout (using short fins):

500 mixed kick warmup

3 x 5 x 100
1 x Flutter kick on stomach, arms at side (breathe by turning onto back)
1 x Dolphin kick on back, arms at side
1 x Side flutter kick, good arm leading
1 x Back flutter kick, good arm leading
1 x Dolphin dives (5-6 kicks per stroke with good arm).

500 cool down, no fins, mostly breaststroke kick on back

2500 LONG COURSE METERS total.

Every single little muscle in my FOOT hurts.

I have a training snorkel on its way to me now....anyone know of some good kick/snorkel drills? Or other kick drills not involving a streamline?

I've got at least 2-3 months more of this....wish me luck and/or kill me now!!! :drown:

RE: The Kicking Lane

Has anyone done this challenge or planning to do it?

I involuntarily did it yesterday. I've always disliked kicking due to ankles of stone. However, my "stable" ankles enable me to run much better than most swimmers can. I did a vigorous 12 mile run Tuesday, then coach ambushed us Wednesday AM with the 400 kick. I did a 7:13, which is quite good for me.

RE: The Kicking Lane

I involuntarily did it yesterday. When was it added?
One question. It says:
2. No "stroking" into wall.
Do you just kick until your board bumps the wall, then turn?

I sent this email to Marcia:

Hi Marcia,
On the
400 kick for Time
Consider requiring counters/timers to use a split sheet & for kickers to include their 50 splits along with their final times

Please clarify the rule:
"2. No stroking into the wall"
On turns, are kickers allowed to redirect their boards before they touch the wall?

On more rules consider specifying
no pulling on lane lines
One or 2 kickers per lane
if there are 2, they must split the lane

Her reply:

Thanks for the feedback, Ande. Unfortunately it's too late to change the wording, as I've already received several entries. But I hope I can clarify this for you.

Yes, you can redirect your board. You just can't pull through the water with one arm before you get to a wall. That's what most people would define as "stroking" so I hope it's obvious to everyone. *Good idea on the rest. I'll include it next year.

Good luck!

1x500m warm-up

Flutter kick (boardless, snorkel)
20x25m on 1:00

30 minutes

Not sure what type of kick set this is - lactate production maybe? I also have no idear what distance this workout will help me with.

Nevertheless, the first few were about 90% effort to the wall. But then-on it started feeling like 95% and furthermore my legs filled up with lead on last 5m of each one making the final bit feel like 100%.

If I did 25m for time it would be about 18 high (no board)

I will do a speedy one tomorrow like 10 second balls to the walls

RE: The Kicking Lane

What did you do in practice today?

8x25m on :30 interval

1,3,5,7 on back 8 hard SDK, then streamline surfaced flutter on back
2,4,6,8 on front 8 hard SDK then streamline surfaced flutter on front

I've found that for me it's equally important to work hard SDK on front AND back. I tend to put more emphasis on whatever is the downward beat of the kick.

:)

My workout was only 800m total today as a cooldown after the weight room.

RE: The Kicking Lane

Swimmers who change age groups during the event may enter and pay twice, but must kick the event twice, once in each age group.

What if I begin kicking at 11:58pm right before my birthday begins at midnight, thus completing it at a different age than when I began? What if two twins, who were born 6 minutes apart, begin kicking at ok I'll stop now

RE: The Kicking Lane

I believe it means to keep both hands on board at all times except for turns, where one hand can catch and push off the wall
