Amateur Swimming Association - Also known as British Swimming. They like to think they are different governing bodies, but they both work at the same head office in Loughborough. They also employ the same members of staff. All very complicated, but that's how the governing body here likes to operate.

These days, the only thing the main outlets carry in men’s shorts or swim suits is just the long and baggy stuff.
So called “jammers” are just a streamlined version of the long and baggy style in men’s swim suits and also “half pants” or “leg veils” that men now wear instead of the short style shorts prior to the 90’s.

Despite the pretense of jammers being a supposedly faster swim suit, the real reason seems to be to comply with the current trend of hyper modesty (that anything exposing men’s upper legs is somehow inappropriate) Just Google the phrase “Take off that speedo” and you’ll see where this mess came from.

RE: Bodysuits on the way back in the UK

Cute avatar, Quicksilver! :D

102.12 Swimwear for Pool Competition
102.12.1 Design—The swimsuits worn for competition shall be nontransparent and
conform to the current concept of the appropriate. The referee shall have
authority to bar offenders from competition until they comply with this
rule.
A Swimwear shall include only a swimsuit, cap and goggles (a nose clip
and ear plugs are allowed). Armbands or legbands shall not be regarded
as parts of the swimsuit and are not allowed.
B In swimming competitions, the competitor must wear only one swimsuit
in one or two pieces. All swimsuits shall be made from textile materials.
For men, the swimsuit shall not extend above the navel nor below the
knees, and for women, shall not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder
nor extend below the knees.
C Only swimsuits complying with FINA swimsuit specifications may be
worn in any USMS sanctioned or recognized competition.
D Exemptions to the foregoing restrictions may be granted to a swimmer,
on a case by case basis, by the chair of the Rules Committee or designee.
Exemptions will be granted only for conflicts due to the swimmer’s
verified religious beliefs or verified medical conditions.
(1) Procedures for applying for an exemption will be established by
the Rules Committee and posted on the U.S. Masters Swimming
website.
(2) No exemption to these restrictions will be granted for a swimsuit
that will give the swimmer a competitive advantage.
(3) The decision of the Rules Committee chair may be appealed only
to the entire Rules Committee, whose decision shall be final and
binding on all parties.
E No swimmer is permitted to wear or use any device or substance to
enhance speed, pace, buoyancy or endurance during a race (such as
webbed gloves, flippers, fins, etc.). Goggles may be worn, and rubdown
oil applied if not considered excessive by the referee. Any kind of tape
on the body is not permitted unless approved by the referee.

RE: Bodysuits on the way back in the UK

I'm not big on religious rituals, dress codes, etc., but some people are, and it isn't right to block them from this sport if we can so easily include them.

We have a large Islamic population in the UK and the ASA has a responsibility to improve inclusion and diversity in swimming participation. The swimsuit rules are a barrier to participation for practicing female muslims.

One of the side products of the body suits era is that countries that had previously not competed in swimming competition at international level, that were predominantly Islamic, started to enter female competitors. This is a good thing for the sport.

I'd agree that at the top level of the sport it could cause controversy, but at the grass roots competitive level is positive.

RE: Bodysuits on the way back in the UK

I've seen this at meets in the U.S., too so I think USA Swimming must also have this provision.

RE: Bodysuits on the way back in the UK

Just in case anybody out there misunderstood, I was referring to Rob Copeland's avatar of the shark. LOL.

Men and women have been swimming in all sorts of garb (or without any) for as long as recorded history. Swim wear has been in a continuous state of evolution. In the early part of the century women swam in what looked more like night gowns or dresses with pantaloons, and i think Ben Franklin swam in the Thames during the revolutionary war and was probably in his birthday suit.
I'm not big on religious rituals, dress codes, etc., but some people are, and it isn't right to block them from this sport if we can so easily include them. Time to continue evolving.

RE: Bodysuits on the way back in the UK

"Bodysuits" and "full body technical race suits" are not synonymous.
