If he trained with Phelps in 07 and early 08,then maybe he might have a point,but to make the claim about time after the Olympics is silly.Phelps said he wasn't motivated then,Bowman said he wasn't motivated then,so what. Bowman resigned from Michigan as of the 2008 Trials, so Phelps would have been back at NBAC after Beijing. Clary must have been talking about before the Olympics.

Someone asked Clary a question about Phelps and he answered honestly. I agree. He was specifically asked what he might have learned from training alongside Phelps at Michigan. He gave an honest answer. blog.pe.com/.../

Someone asked Clary a question about Phelps and he answered honestly. He could have taken the high road- in fact he should have, but isn't it nice that he didn't do what every athlete does, "Oh Mike is a great competitor and I have nothing but respect for him."

I like it, actually. Adds a little interest. Swimmers are usually so boring. When's the last time a swimmer shot him/herself in the leg accidentally while at a club? Or climbed into the stands to punch a heckler? :bolt: Or got his picture taken smoking a bong :bolt:.

Training harder doesn't always mean training smarter. Is a four year training plan necessary for peak performance? That's a long time to be zoned in and perhaps it's not necessary. Agreed. As long as the fitness level can be recouped in time it shouldn't be a big deal. The comments are probably coming from someone who busted their tail but still lost out to what he perceived as a half hearted training effort (by Phelps). Still, it's not the best form to make negative remarks about your team mate(s) even if it was an honest opinion. Personally I think Phelps will be as dialed in as ever as he's got to hold off not only Lochte, but the long awaited rematch with Cavic.

Phelps doesn't need to train as hard as he did leading up to Beijing. He has to work really hard somewhere to make an Olympic team at 15. Phelps just maintained from post-Beijing to Shanghai worlds. I am sure that he busted his hump in the last year. It would have shown in the 400 IM. Clary should just worry about Clary right now. What is it with these swimmers running their mouths before the Olympics or even during Trials. Do the trash talking in the pool like Phelps and Kitijama. There is always a swimmer who doesn't train that hard and yet, rocks the house in the pool. I didn't like it when I was in high school because I swam with a bunch of people who couldn't handle a 2 hour practice or couldn't be bother to train the summer. However, they cruise to Junior National cuts like nobody's business. The lesson I got from that is that some people have to work hard and some people hate. Here is a quote from some MTV reality show to sum this up, "Don't hate the player, hate the game!"

the thing that upsets me about his statement isn't the way he answered, its his disregard for all the other factors that are in his favor, but not everyone elses. should i go cry to the media (not that any one would listen) about how i train as hard as Clary - but since i am only 5'8" and he is 6'xx" he will win everytime and it isn't fair? no, life isn't fair - cry me a river.

Even Bowman said on 60 Minutes that Phelps did 30% what he had planned for him last year and yet he did great in Shanghai. Too bad MP and Clary couldn't joke around on Twitter about this, "Hey TC, remember when I used to ditch weights?" "MP- I wish I had half of your talent so I could kick your ass!"

I don't care if he was asked a direct question.Reporters are in the business of trying to create controversy.Didn't he see what happened in the 100 Fly at 2009 Worlds when Cavics riled Phelps. Maybe Bowman paid Clary to give Phelps a wake up call in his best event.This event suddenly becomes a real WR threat by Phelps.

Wow, all he did was give Phelps power. They have a media guide. Looks like he did not read it I've always suspected that serious overtraining in swimming is the rule. Possibly excludes a few champs. Another data point (although, as Swimcat and That Guy point out, suspect).
