The Finis Skin socks are nice and thin, but they're made from Lycra I believe. If it was me, I'd probably just wear a regular pair of thin cotton socks and save the money. Just wash them with fresh water afterwards or they'll lose their "stretch" pretty quickly.

Couldbebetterfly, Thanks for confirming my hunch. I bought a pair of slotted swim fins from Finis. Unfortunately, I had to stop using them because they hurt my toes too much. Then, upon checking further, I found that this model of swim fin was known to cause blisters. Well, I never got blisters, because the pain made me stop using them before blisters developed. Next, I bought another set of Finis swim fins, but this style was said to be "blister free". That may be, but they did irritate my toes the first time I used them, and that irritation will probably continue. That's when I thought of buying some kind of toe protection. I found some, but I didn't like the idea of having to invest yet another $15 to keep my toes pain-free. "What about wearing socks?" I thought, but I wasn't sure that would be effective. Anyway, now that I've seen what you have to say on the subject, I'm going to be trying ordinary socks the next time I get in the pool. Thanks for sharing your experience.

You might want to try Tyr Burner fins: www.swimoutlet.com/.../22453.htm I no longer need to wear the neoprene socks I used to wear with my other fins, because these fins are very soft and flexible. Just a warning that switching to the Tyr Burner fins might not help you. They are the ones that I use, and although I agree they are soft and flexible, they still cut the top of my feet (or foot, I should say -- my right foot). I kept thinking that my foot would toughen up, but eventually it became clear that I needed to wear them with a sock or live with a permanent cut on my foot. I should also note that I am not the only one on my team who has to wear socks with the Tyr Burners; one of my lane mates says that it is because she has bony feet. I don't know if my feet are particularly bony, but whatever.

I've had mine for quite awhile and I have not experienced any problems with them. And, my feet are quite skinnny and bony! I was surprised, because I had never been able to wear fins without having problems. What definitely helps me, though, is never using fins two days in a row. Not only do my feet need a break; my leg muscles do, as well. I wish that helped me... several times I let a couple of weeks go by so that they would fully heal, only to have them get cut again after just one session with the fins. I have always been very blister prone... new shoes almost always mean blisters for me. Perhaps that is related, I don't know. Anyway, I am just happy to have now found a solution (the Sporti socks) that works for me.

Report: I tried the Speedo Neoprene socks, but they were too thick for me -- too thick to fit in my existing fins, and they made my feet hot. Also, just as a note for anyone who wants to try them, I was at the low end of the size range and they were too big for me. It seems to me that it is better for the socks to be a little small than a little big. I ended up settling on the Sporti Nylon Spandex socks instead. They are thinner and so fit in my fin better, are cooler, etc. I will have to see how they wear over time. But I am now able to do a lot of fin kicking without having the skin ripped off the tops of my feet. (yay!) Thanks to everyone for their responses!

Yes, I have the Speedo Neo Socks. I got them when we did fin testing for SWIMMER magazine last year. I use them for two different reasons. I have one pair of fins that is a little too big for me. I wear the socks with them to make the fins fit better. I also wear them during open water workouts when the water is cold. They are thicker than regular athletic socks. If your fins fit snugly now, you probably won't be able to get them on over the socks.

I've had my daughter wear ordinary cotton/nylon socks with her fins to help keep them on her feet as her feet are incredibly narrow. She seems to get on fine with them - and they come up super-white afterwards ;) I always wondered if there were proper "fin socks" out there. I'll be interested to know if people think they're worth it as once she moves groups she'll be wearing her fins a lot more.

A scuba shop would carry these. I think with these you would need a larger size fin!!

I started using speedo's fin socks after getting big toe top skinned badly one day from my speedo fins (a strap back fin), and was getting cuts on my ankle from tyr fins (full foot box fin) . the socks work very well and are very comfortable. The socks are a bit of a pain to take on and off, if you are switching in and out of fins (or im lazy), so i tend to put them on once and swim everything with fins on for awhile. The socks are a bit bulky and make your feet larger. My speedo fins have a strap back and its relativley easy to stretch the strap and cram my foot in. i haven't tried the socks with the longer full box tyr fins yet, but imagine it will be difficult to cram my foot into the fin box. think there was a thread a few weeks back from someone who wasn't liking their tyr socks' seam.
