She is my all time favourite swimmer. I still think the greatest race I have ever seen was the 800m at the 1994 World Championships. The race between Evans and Hayley Lewis was amazing.

Janet lowered her OT cut by 2 seconds tonight in the 800 free. Just that much closer now. I was timing for the finals and it was very cool to watch her swim. There were a few other nice swims last night that are mentioned in the article below. www.ocregister.com/.../evans-350187-time-pool.html

She's forty!! Oh! My, I remember cheering her on when I was forty something in 1988. I even wore out my Bud Greenspan's Cappy Productions VHS tape watching her win gold over and over. Now, does anyone know how to or where to purchase a dvd version of Bud Greenspan's video of the 1988 Olympics? Every kid who swims, should watch it.

She was a guest speaker for the Negaunee-Ishpeming, MI, 2 1/4 mile "race" for diabetes. The host tried to persuade her to swim it. She politely, but very firmly declined. She's a So Cal girl. I'm sure the idea of diving into a lake in Michigan's UP--summer or otherwise--scared her to death!

Nice story, thanks for sharing. Do you think she'd ever consider open water distance swimming outside of the pool? She was a guest speaker for the Negaunee-Ishpeming, MI, 2 1/4 mile "race" for diabetes. The host tried to persuade her to swim it. She politely, but very firmly declined. That was about 2 years ago.

I guess you never know what anyone will do. I never thought I would do open water swimming and I have learned to love it. I hope she sticks with swimming no matter what happens at Trials.

If I remember --- she swims with a straight arm recovery, but has a great under water pull, hence her records!

I love it! Janet took me out for my 21st birthday when we were living in Austin at the same time. Always a fun girl. I hope she makes it and swimming changes millions of heads as a result.

I loved the part where she thought about all the other things she could have got involved in - volunteering, PTO etc, but decided to swim instead. I'm right there with ya Janet, but only for 10 miles a week!

She seems like a genuinely good person. Really hope she makes it. Dara set the stage. If Janet makes it, the fluke factor will be thoroughly kiboshed, and lots of people will start looking at aging differently--and swimming as a fountain of youth.

She seems VERY sure of her chance to do trials & hopes to make the team. I'm sure that she will make those of us that have followed her times proud that a 40 year old mom can come back! GO JANET !!!!!!!!

I would really like to see her make the team. Her style is really unusual and goes to show there isn't only ONE specific style that works.

Ditto that. I think, though, given what she describes as her training regimen, that all of us in the "Go The Distance" challenge should be very glad she's not clocking her mileage in here. I'd really love to see her make the Olympic team, but, more than that, I hope she becomes a regular on the USMS scene and starts swimming Nationals and other meets over the rest of her swimming lifetime. 10 miles a day...she says it like it's nothing to her!! Joking about it even. :)
