As he made the B time, one swimmer can be selected, but that wouldn't be firmed up until later. There may be another opportunity to get A times as there is in Britain (only in events that haven't yet been filled).

I suspect that this would be an example where the winner would be selected with a B time to provide him with the experience of Olympic competition.

RE: Aussie Trials 2012

Maybe Thorpe should have trained for the 1500.

RE: Aussie Trials 2012

Actually, neither of them made the Olympic A cut, so I guess the 15 year old is not going to London.

To paraphrase, he said he gives him props for trying, but Ian's gotten slower while everyone else has gotten faster. He said he had the feeling even Ian didn't really think he was going to make it. I think he's right about this. I got the impression Ian thinks he got back in the pool a little too late to get back to where he needed to be. I do hope Ian keeps at it and make Worlds next year.

I think he's right about not really believing...

On another note, there are some great times coming from the French trials too - Agnel 1.44 200 free, Camille Muffat 1.54/4.02 in the women's, forget his name, but 52.7 in the men's backstroke....

Wasn't he training for over a year? That's a lot of time to train for the 100 free, and Thorpe has a history of being very fast in the 100. I think his coach just failed to prepare him properly.

RE: Aussie Trials 2012

Wasn't he training for over a year? Is it, though, if you've been completely out of the water for a few years? Thorpe probably wasn't in the same kind of shape as someone like Brendan Hansen who was able to get back much more quickly. If you've seen photos of Thorpe before his comeback it was pretty clear he was really out of shape.

RE: Aussie Trials 2012

During Gary Hall Jr.'s chat session yesterday I asked him what he thought about Ian Thorpe's comeback attempt. This is going to be a good final. Also, I wonder why Magnussen doesn't do the 200. His 50/100 dropoff is similar to somebody like Hoogie.

RE: Aussie Trials 2012

Magnussen's 200 free reasoning: www.swimnews.com/.../9074

Today's 100 fly semifinal was the last 2012 chance for Michael Klim's comeback. He made it to the semis in the 100 free and 100 fly but did not make it to the finals.

RE: Aussie Trials 2012

The elevators in our building have little TVs in them. As I was riding up this morning one of the "latest" headlines was that Thorpe failed to qualify in the 200m free. I didn't know if I should be pleased that this fact rose to the level of being a headline or disappointed that it took them almost a week to mention it.

Maybe next week they will report that Duke's men's basketball team failed to win their first round game in the NCAA tournament. :D

Hey this might not be the end for him. He still has worlds next year and who knows, maybe the Olympics in '16. Lezak was no spring chicken when he tore up the field in that relay. I think 6 years might have been too much time away to make up for it in 14 months. I know from personal experience. At age 44, I am making up for 41 years away from the pool; it's a long and arduous process.
