I signed up, but you won't be lapping me. I didn't enter the 2 fly. I entered the 400 IM, 200 free, 100 free and 200 IM. Get ready to gridge it up in the 200 IM! To ensure that I get really psyched and do not act like a teenage girl, I am going to listen to selections from Geek's Michael Bolton library prior to the race.

I signed up, but you won't be lapping me. I didn't enter the 2 fly. I entered the 400 IM, 200 free, 100 free and 200 IM. You better be ready to test out all that distance training you've been doing then!! 400 IM is where it's at this weekend!! We may get lucky and have Rick Colella and Brook Brayman as well in the heat!! Good thing That Guy isn't swimming it...he can run my Flip camera!! :banana:

By the end of Summer League season everyone has gone half nuts so a little levity can be fun. With some of the insane parent behavior I've witnessed in Summer League I'll take some goofy relay swimming any time I can get it.

This is crazy, why should you act like a cocky crazy swimmer. If you think you're to good to swim in a competition you should swim among faster swimmers.:applaud:

I don't remember anything like this going on in college swimming, but that was a long time ago and things may have changed? Hadn't seen anything like this at my old AAU or kids USA meets either; I saw something like this happen in 1991. 400 freesylt relay: All the kids from McCollough High School swam a 75 hard and then waited for the other team to catch up. That was 21 years ago. I am pretty sure that was not the first time high school kids acted like morons. Don't confuse this with me thinking that what these kids did was alright because I don't. But it is not a sign that society is collapsing. (and honestly, their form is pretty spotty, I have a feeling that these kids really are only big fish in a small pond and could very easily find themselves on the other end of the stunt).

That's exactly what I thought. Where is slow's coach when we need him?! My coach responded by entering me in the 200 Open at the end of the meet. I got to experience what it was like to be overmatched and come in dead last. That taught me the lesson. I can't say I was always an angel, but I never again initiated poor sportsmanship during an athletic event.

I said I thought it was funny. Not very sportsman-like though and pretty disrespectful of the other teams who are legitimately trying. I obviously would have DQ'ed them if I was an official.

Not regarding the video, but about the line between trash talking (or cockiness) versus poor sportsmanship (or taunting).... Personally I can remember crossing it one time. There had been no previous provocation so it was pure arrogance on my part. No excuses! My coach responded by entering me in the 200 Open at the end of the meet. I got to experience what it was like to be overmatched and come in dead last. That taught me the lesson. The teen males talk smack out in the open. The teen girls talk about all the other girls behind their backs. :banana: I don't think it stops with just teen males. I think this is just the beginning, and it only gets better as they get older!! I have a 79 year old teammate :cane: who can really lay the smack down when needed...and you can't help but just take it. :D What's funny is to listen to all the old timers talkin' the $#!+ back and forth at practice...really gets you laughing.

I'm very surprised the starter started the race with the guy facing the wrong way That's why I kinda figured the officials must have been "in on it." I just can't imagine they'd start the race with the guy facing backwards otherwise. I think it's OK if everyone else in the pool knew these guys were just going to swim as a goof even if the other teams played it straight. If not then I think it's really bad sportsmanship.

Kirk, if you don't register for the meet, then it's on like Donkey Kong!! 400 IM would be a good event for you too! I did not find this funny. As was mentioned above, if the entire heat was made of relays goofing off, then fine. But everyone else is doing their best, and these four are making a mockery of the event. If this were not the last event of the meet, I would have barred those four from further competition in the meet.

I have to assume everyone knew they were going to goof off otherwise no one would have thought this was funny at all. Probably this was these guys' last summer league meet or something. Actually, if you listen to the audio, you can hear a snarky girl talking about how "they don't like this" and specifically looking for the officials to react. She would have gotten a reaction from me... Also - given how litigious our society is nowadays, I'm shocked that anyone would let the one kid backflip into a shallow pool from the blocks!

I've been behind the blocks or on the deck as a timer or offical at summer league and HS meets on a few occassions where much better male relays talked some pretty bad smack and were clearly just "toying with their prey.":bitching: Don't ever remember hearing or seeing a female relay talking smack or acting out such as this. :angel: Is it just teen males?? Some summer meets have had out of control coaches and parents providing and setting a bad examples. I don't remember anything like this going on in college swimming, but that was a long time ago and things may have changed? Hadn't seen anything like this at my old AAU or kids USA meets either; those meets are very professional and this wouldn't be tolerated by adults with a deep respect for this sport. You have to wonder what the officals, coaches and parents were thinking when they let that relay go off. Who's in charge? The first swimmer should have been DQd for standing backwards (even if their summer rules allow for 1 false start) and the whole relay never should have happened. You could chalk it off to immature teenage males showing off, but i think it goes deeper, cause the adults stood by, watched, and were laughing at it. Unbellievable.

If that were an unofficial event like a t-shirt relay or something, then I would have no problem with it. But it was a real event and the other kids were trying their best.
