I remember that Hoogie made a similar comment when Thorpe retired. He pushed himself to go faster than he ever thought he would go, just because Thorpe was out there.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Lochte 8 medals in London according to Menshealth.com

Jim,

A few years ago I was lucky enough to attend the Golden Goggles awards when they were here in Los Angeles. I got to sit at a table with Janet Evans and Brian Goodell...a thrill for me.

After the ceremonies I got to chat with many swimmers including Rowdy, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak. I also spoke to Michael.

I said to him, &quot; You know, when you are done there is always Masters swimming.&quot; He looked at me and said, &quot; When I&#39;m done, I&#39;m done!&quot;:bolt:

I am sure that&#39;s what Thorpe thought too, but then the fathood began to accumulate...

I do wonder how easy it is going to be for these guys to adjust their caloric intake post mega-training. I mean you eat 7000-12,000 calories a day for 15 years, I think it&#39;s gotta be a major adjustment to go down to 2000-3000!<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Lochte 8 medals in London according to Menshealth.com

Jim,

I copied and pasted them all into my file on Mr. Lochte! As of now, I am only scheduled for 15-20 minutes with him for interview time (though I do get to swim a couple laps with him after his practice--I am hoping for some tips on SDKs.)

I am a little confused about his times from GP. When did he do that fantastic 100 fly? Then he got crushed by MP in the 200 IM. It almost seems like he&#39;s got some fast swims in him now, despite lack of tapering, but he also is worn out--no doubt in part from pushing tractor tires and dragging anchor chains down the alley behind his house!

If by some miracle I can extend the time I interview him past the 20 min allotment, I would also love to ask him about whether he likes swimming enough that he ever thinks about doing masters after his retirement from the professional ranks. Can you imagine what he and Phelps could do in the 80-84 age group if they kept at his for the next 55 years!

Please keep letting me know anything else you&#39;d like to ask him. Maybe with my twin brother&#39;s help, I can post the audio interview on a podcast for you all to listen to at some point. (It shouldn&#39;t be hard to tell the interviewer and interviewee apart: I will be the stumbling, stuttering, Colombo-like one; he will presumably be the Florida surfer nice guy Adonis one.)<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Lochte 8 medals in London according to Menshealth.com

Fascinating. Envious of the opportunity to have a conversation with Ryan.

After watching the Indy GP online, among the things I&#39;d ask him is how he maintains his confidence after training heavily through (and getting beat during) meets in-season. At this Grand Prix, he was beat by guys who will not beat him come trials--how does he know he will be able to step it up? Most athletes--even elite ones--need a reminder that they can hit the wall first. Lochte seems totally chill with winning a console or getting 5th from lane 7 three months out and then making the team when it counts.

Recent training philosophy seems to say that you need to practice swimming fast in order to do just that. How does Ryan swim a 1:59 in the 200 IM for a year and know that he can drop a 1:54.00 when he needs to? it&#39;s a very different race (at that level) , with major differences in number of strokes per length, rhythm, etc.

I also wonder what his plans are after London. Seems clear that MP is retiring, but no one seems to be commenting on what RL is doing. I don&#39;t see any reason for him to retire. Would love to have some continuity as we hope for the next generation to step it up.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Lochte 8 medals in London according to Menshealth.com

Ask him about his 200 IM race (or any race) e.g. What aspects of technique or race strategy do you think about just prior to a race?

Maybe you can word the question better, but I am looking for what aspects of his stroke or turn or whatever does he think about prior to. In a 200 free I think of easy speed the first fifty etc., or I think of hitting the turns hard and doing three SDK&#39;s or switching to 4th stroke breathing on the last 25.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Lochte 8 medals in London according to Menshealth.com

Tyler McGill went 51.95 in France last week. I would ask him about swimming in Phelps&#39; shadow. I know he trains really hard and puts in serious mileage in the pool, but I&#39;d be curious if he does anything really technique oriented, drills, etc? And we know he&#39;s a great underwater kicker, so it would be interesting to hear what he does to work on that aspect of his swimming. Does he use a monofin at all?<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Lochte 8 medals in London according to Menshealth.com

It looks like I am going to go down to Florida to interview Mr. Lochte for a Men&#39;s Health article in early April. Not absolutely sure what the gist of this is supposed to be about yet, but I suspect the theme will be whether he can set a new standard for total number of medals won, or come close, and if so how.

If you could ask Ryan some questions in person, what would you ask him?

Plus if anybody has ideas about why he is so extraordinarily good, I&#39;d really be grateful to hear them. I read that both his parents were swimming coaches, and he got his perfect strokes from his mom and his training and stamina from his father. (As far as perfect form goes, I am sure this has changed quite a bit from his youth--was it his mother who redefined this, or some other coach?)

When you think of human accomplishment on the bell shaped curve, he is so far out there on the right hand margins--well, any world record holder is, I suppose, but he and Phelps are just incredible specimens, the Secretariats of swimming.

They are beyond even the top 1 percent of the top 1 percent. How do people get to this rarefied position?<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Lochte 8 medals in London according to Menshealth.com

I think you are right. I&#39;m really enjoying reading people&#39;s comments on Lochte 2012.

Random late night thoughts while I&#39;m tired...

In my opinion, he wants to beat The King most of all.

He&#39;ll swim

200 fr
200/400 im
200 bk
4 x 200 fr
4 x 100 fr (makes top 6)

Sidenotes- Will Phelps swim the 400 im? Will Phelps swim the 100 bk? Huge wild card here.

200 fr is insanely competitive. 5-6 guys are literally within tenths of a second of one another.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Lochte 8 medals in London according to Menshealth.com

I have a feeling Lochte will enter a ton of events at Trials and see how well he can handle it. His 2012 OT schedule should the same as 2008. I&#39;m very sure he&#39;ll swim the 100 free prelims and semi&#39;s, doubt he&#39;ll swim the 1 fr finals, because it splits his 2 bk &amp; 2 IM semis. I&#39;m sure he could cruise his 2 bk semi and still make finals, he could punch a fast 1 free in finals, but he&#39;s not likely to make top 2 and might not want to endanger his 2 IM. It&#39;s a tough schedule. Plus consider warm ups, warm downs, interviews and showing up to the ready room for each race, he&#39;s going to be super busy. He&#39;ll be very fast and well prepared. The difference is 100 back, with Piersol out, he&#39;s got a better chance to make top 2 but USA&#39;s got a lot of really great 100 backstrokers &amp; so far Lochte seems better at 200&#39;s.

USA&#39;s Top 100 bk times for 2010 &amp; 11

53.01 Thoman,
53.04 Plummer
53.05 Grevers,
53.69 Lochte
53.71 Phelps,
54.20 Owens
54.22 Russel
54.31 Godso
54.45 Bal
54.56 Hesen
from FINAs world Rankings

Probably going to take 52.8 to make the team

100 bk &amp; 100 free are the 2 big questions for Lochte.

Knowing what we all know of Lochte, I think he will make the team for 4x100 free, but as Ande points out making the 4x100 medley will be tough. He then has to think about his schedule and find more individual events.

I just can&#39;t see it. I can&#39;t see him taking it all on, and I can&#39;t see the US winning the 4x100 free. The one thing that would change my mind on it is having 2 of the biggest racers there are on the team in Phelps and Lochte - even if they aren&#39;t specialists. Here&#39;s another good analysis -
