1. Last month, I discovered &quot;Go the Distance&quot; and inputted all my yardage from the past year. With a week and a half left in the year, I have put in 660 miles. After analyzing this year&#39;s training volume (with heavier weighting given to the last few months of the year) and thinking carefully about what type of yardage volume I can sustain for a whole year, I have decided upon 1,234,567. :)

It appears that I am going to hit this goal on Saturday. So next year I am going to shoot for the same number but in meters. Possible side effects include using strange words like &quot;milliliters&quot; and &quot;kilograms,&quot; as well as a tendency towards Greenwich Mean Time. :blah:<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2012: Resolutions!

Swimosaur, I like your goals and they are consistent with mine. So, do you mind if I add to your four for my own goals? I turn 50, in January, so I get to add #4 to my list.

5. In addition to those above, my GTD goal is 400 miles. (I swam 262 last year and I&#39;m at 367 as of today; 92 miles over my original goal of 275 for the year.) But, I agree with Swimosaur: It has to be fun! It has been a blast, this year, so as long as I continue to feel the same way about swimming, I&#39;m goin&#39; for it!

6. Make NQT&#39;s (SCY) in the 100 breaststroke. (I already achieved it in the 50 and have given up on the idea of trying to make it in the 200. I&#39;m too far off to make it attainable and training the 200 breaststroke is not fun for me.)

7. Making NQT&#39;s in the 50 free is probably too lofty of a goal, but I&#39;m setting it, anyway. I will be happy if I just get faster and get a PB. (My PB is :33.29 and I would have to hit :31.03; too much of a drop, considering my Meniere&#39;s doesn&#39;t allow for me to do flip turns).

8. Compete in the maximum 8 individual events at Auburn, in February; something I have never done. (The most events I have ever competed in at a meet was 5 at a one-day Pentathlon or 5 at Auburn, a two-day meet.)

9. Continue to work on my backstroke (worst stroke) and butterfly and get PB&#39;s in the 50&#39;s of both strokes.

10. Finally meet Swimosaur at a meet! We have both been at Auburn and Georgia Tech (St. Nick&#39;s), as well as Nats. and have never met.

So, Forumites, how are you doing on your 2012 Resolutions? We still have more than a month to achieve our goals!

As for mine, this is where I am at so far:
On Swimosaur&#39;s 1-4 that I resolved to do, as well:
1. Keep it fun- Achieved!
2. Swam in several SCY and 2 LCM meets; my SCM meet is coming up on December 15
3. Swam at Greensboro Nationals, not in Omaha.
4. Swam at two local Geezer Games and Georgia&#39;s state Geezer Games. I qualified for Nationals, however, I&#39;m spending my $ to go to Mission Viejo, for USMS Nationals, instead.

My five:
5. Achieved! I swam 400 miles as of last week and had fun doing it!
6.
7. :badday:
8. I also swam in two relays. :bliss:
9. :ohyeah: in both at Auburn, last February
10. :chug: &amp; :smooch: for being a great guy, cheering me on in my races, and counting my 800 for me at Greenville.

After my SCM meet, I&#39;ll start thinking about 2013! :D<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2012: Resolutions!

Elainek

Yeah, I think you&#39;re right. My predictions were quite accurate, in regards to which noodlers and gym users would last and which ones wouldn&#39;t make it past 1 or 2 times, never to be seen again- until January 2, 2013. And, of course, the noodlers who screamed the loudest about not wanting to share the pool with me during their noodler sessions haven&#39;t been seen in a class since they (temporarily) won their battle, in 2010. :shakeshead:

(:hijack: Footnote: They may have won the battle, but I won the war. :duel:. Common sense prevailed and I ultimately won back my right to swim in a dedicated swim lane during their classes and for swimmers to have 2 dedicated lanes at all times, as the rules were originally written. The noodlers that were :censor: who stuck with their resolutions and attend regularly have finally left me alone and we all get along just fine. Once they started treating me with some respect, I decided to play nice and move over to the wall lane during class, so the deep water noodlers could have my deep(er) lane. They even thank me now! :applaud: Yes, civility is finally alive, again, at our community pool.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2012: Resolutions!

Well , after a vacation ----I gained 6 lbs. Are you saying you&#39;ll be there?!?! As you know, it&#39;s a fast pool!

After this weekend in Auburn, I decided I need to do something about the freakin&#39; fly. It&#39;s no longer good enough to say, &quot;I swam the 4IM/2Fly &amp; made it&quot;, now I want to go faster. And to go faster, I need to do something about the fly. (Yes, you can read that as, &quot;Peter kicked his ass again, didn&#39;t he?&quot;)

Back to the drawing board! The puzzle for the next few weeks will be to re-engineer the fly to something that works better in the 2IM &amp; 4IM, saving 2Fly for later.

By the way, Peter had a stellar meet this weekend, shattering PBs in virtually every event. I don&#39;t know what he&#39;s been putting in his Wheaties, but it&#39;s working!<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2012: Resolutions!

Swimosaur, I like your goals and they are consistent with mine. Check, check, and check, in addition to swimming in a SCY meet and having FUN!

I am most pleased with being able to successfully swim the 4 individual events each day- and a relay each day, as well. I didn&#39;t know if my body would be able to handle it, considering the autoimmune issues I have been dealing with this year. But, a good taper did the trick. And, I got four PB&#39;s in the process: 50 back (by almost 3 seconds), 100 IM (by 1 second), 50 fly (by almost 2 seconds), and 50 free (no NQT, though). I also was surprised by my 100 free; the first time swimming the event. I seeded at two seconds faster than my best practice time, however I took another 31/2 seconds off of that. As for my breaststroke events; not my best, but not my worst. I haven&#39;t trained the 200, so my goal was to keep my stroke count down and ride the glide, so I could survive the next two events that immediately followed.

As for goal #10, it was great meeting you Swimosaur! :D I&#39;m glad we met at the very beginning of the meet. Thanks for stopping me and being so NICE. Your comments made my day and set the tone for a very memorable and fun meet for me. I&#39;ll look forward to seeing you at future meets! I think. :D

I just got back from the meet. It was at the College of San Mateo, by the way. With this meet, I&#39;ve competed at that pool four times now. The weather was thankfully glorious. Just beautiful, couldn&#39;t have asked for better conditions. Last year at the same meet, it was wet, windy, and generally miserable.

I have 3 new in-season best times:

100 fly: 1:08.86. That&#39;s two seconds shaved off the time I had before I tapered in July. I absolutely died on the last 40 yards, I probably did not warm-up enough, but the pool was super-crowded, so a quality warm-up is impossible, anyway. My coach says I still spend too much time underwater- she says, &quot;4 or 5 dolphin kicks and that&#39;s it, surface.&quot; I&#39;m still relieved, though, because after July, my butterfly has just been off... my time from November was 1:13, which wasn&#39;t anything by any arrangement of the goalposts. It was like all the mojo went from my butterfly to my breaststroke.

100 back: 1:11.53. This was probably my straightest backstroke race ever because, lo and behold, I was in lane 2 and the long-course flags were right above me. That was fun. New in-season best!

100 free: 57.32. My second fastest freestyle race ever, by a second. :bliss:

All in all, the meet was the perfect combination of motivating encouragement yet still getting a little bit of cake to eat. As I learned in the past six months, it&#39;s great, pure joy, to have a meet like I had in July, but there&#39;s a danger of satisfaction inherent in such meets that makes you sit on your ass when instead you should be swimming towards your new goals, y&#39;know? It was like my coach said to me after a subpar meet in October... &quot;you&#39;ve been resting on your laurels, all fat and happy...&quot;<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2012: Resolutions!

Good job! :chug:<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2012: Resolutions!

I respect all of you and understand your doubt in regards to my strategy this year, but I think, for me, I know what I need to do. That&#39;ll be after a month of the kind of yardage like that week I had in November. When I have my times from next month&#39;s meet, I&#39;ll come on here with them and we can discuss whether or not I need to make a course correction. But for better or worse, I&#39;ve made the resolution/goal and I&#39;m not changing it until I have more of my own data about how I&#39;m responding to the work.

Hello, again, guys! As promised, I am here to report on my month so far and the first day of this meet.

On the very first day of the year, I got sick. This was curious, because I got sick in the exact same way in the first week of 2011, too. Both times, I had done some kind of housecleaning two days before becoming sick (in the more recent case, I had been moving old dusty boxes out of a closet to a storage shed, and there was some mold). I stayed sick until Sunday the 8th, but I still swam through the week, sick and crappy and all. Last year, after getting sick, I opted out of going to practices and that just made the uphill climb to get back to where I was before the Xmas break all that much harder. So, this year, I had a classic Will Smith &quot;aw hell naw&quot; moment and just swam through it.

I did, however, decide not to do the extra workouts just yet. One of my new years&#39; resolutions that I didn&#39;t tell anyone about before was to use my intuition more. My intuition told me it would be a bad idea to try and start this &quot;big push&quot; of extra work in the same week I was sick. I hope you agree.

Anyway, since my horrible meet in December, I had actually been on a roll with one great practice after another. That continued even after I&#39;d been out of the pool for four days between Xmas and New Years, and after I&#39;d been sick. Aghast at the thought of messing it all up by doing extra workouts, I just went to my one practice every weekday up until this weekend&#39;s meet. So, I took a rain check on the extra work.

How is my meet so far? Pretty intriguing! Today, I swam the 100 *** and 50 free.

100 ***: 1:17.04. That&#39;s a new PB by 3 seconds, which tops my previous 1:20.2 PB from July when I was shaved and tapered. I&#39;ve been working on my rhythm, pullouts, and head and hand position. And finally, all my 100s are now faster than my first 100 scy free time of 1:19.92 from three years ago. :bump: My 100 *** is now faster than my 100 back was one year ago.

50 free: 25.32. This is virtually the same time I went last month when I was shaved and tapered for one week for that awfully disappointing meet (then, I went 25.29.). All my hair has grown back and I&#39;m certainly not tapered at all. In the middle of the season, I&#39;m now 70 milliseconds away from my July PB of 24.58 (my time before July was 26.3).

What changed? Every month last year I averaged about 100k yards when I was doing consistent work, but last November, I did 165k yards. That month, I would go to my university pool&#39;s lap swim hours on my own, away from my team workout, and do kicking workouts anywhere between 3000 and 7000 yards. On five days in November, I did 6800 yards of all sorts of kicking workouts ranging from sprint sets to distance sets. Last September, I struggled to get 6x100s kick w/ a board in on the 1:45. Last week, I did 100s on 1:40 kick w/ a board getting to the wall in 1:25 (with my body hair almost fully grown back). I have this very clear &quot;tri-state muscle area&quot; on my thighs, when I flex them, that I did not have before November.

I respect all of you and understand your doubt in regards to my strategy this year, but I think, for me, I know what I need to do. I need to be in the pool more. For me, work works. More work works more. Even in sprints. Maybe for my bad meet last month, my body just wasn&#39;t ready. So I&#39;m going to have more November-sized months coming up in February and March, at least, and I&#39;m going to diversify the purposes of the workouts from just kicking.

I have three more events tomorrow: 100 fly, back, and free. Can&#39;t wait. :)<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2012: Resolutions!

I&#39;m going to try 500 miles on my FLOG!!<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2012: Resolutions!

Okay, this is pretty funny.

THAT was hilarious!!

My resolutions are so humble I won&#39;t bother to bore you with actual times. Suffice it to say, I intend to go a lot faster this year. And farther. And to more meets. Whether anyone else from Tallahassee comes or not.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2012: Resolutions!

The first weekend of the new year the pool was packed. When I finished my workout and got out I saw at least three people waiting to get in. (For some unknown reason only two of the six lanes are set up for circling. The rest only hold two swimmers unless people agree to circle.)

Last weekend there were at most five people in the pool during my entire workout. There was always an empty lane. Although I was swimming in a circle lane I need not have bothered.

Resolution season is officially over.

Every January it&#39;s the same thing: All of the Resolutioners who quit last February show up in the gym again. And, the noodlers return... :afraid:

Those of us who are regulars joke about taking bets as to who is going to drop out when. One thing for sure: By March 1, all of the Resolutioners have dropped out, never to be seen again- until January 2. :bolt: It&#39;s strange, I never notice any difference at my gym each January. Maybe the n00bs all get herded into a special area, probably over near the ropes. Trainer: &quot;Whip those up and down for our amusement. Oh I mean, uh, toned six pack abs mumble mumble!&quot;<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2012: Resolutions!

Okay, this is pretty funny.
