Not really a problem at my pool regarding the locker room, except for the "family" locker facilities. Is there some unwritten rule that says moms can go into the opposite sex locker rooms at any time to check on their sons? I have had two occasions when I was changing over with my two boys ages 5 and 3, where a mom has just barged into the locker room with no warning whatsoever, to check on her son. (who btw was at least 8 years old) And for some other unknown reason, at the Y during summer camps, you can expect that when the campers come into the boys locker room, they will be accompanied by both male and female counselors. Really weird if you ask me.

Given basic rules (no photos, no touching, etc.) then if you are not comfortable with nudity, don't go to a public change room. Report creepy and inappropriate behaviour - which, BTW, does not include a middle aged person removing their suit to shower. The teens who are "uncomfortable" with naked adults probably watch a fair deal of nakedness or near nakedness on TV/movies/internet...kind of ironic. My advice: Get a grip - we're talking the human body here, which is not an obscenity.

I have a feeling Fenella may have been exaggerating just a tad. I sure hope so, anyway. I did take issue last year with the mother of a hoodie wearing spotty oik who was the same height as me, but I suppose could have been on overgrown 6 year old I am 5 foot 8 .........................

Not to excuse the practice you describe, but there was an article in a recent Time about the earlier onset of puberty I have a feeling Fenella may have been exaggerating just a tad. I sure hope so, anyway.

That's crazy. Any kid who's old enough to be in school should be using the appropriate sex locker room.

I've been walked in on while changing several times at the gym where I swim by female staff. They were just doing chores like replacing the towels, or cleaning early before closing on Friday, but nonetheless it's embarrassing.

My club swims in a pool that has no individual changing cubicles I have no problem with women bringing in children. However I am getting rather fed up with woman bringing in (large) virtually adolescent boys whose voices are on the verge of breaking, yet are apparently incapable of being left alone to change in the boys changing room Amen to that sista!!!!! I teach at a local grade school and I have had parents bring boys in the girl's locker room who go to my school. When that happens I just leave and wait in the hallway till they are done!

we even have co-ed staff that clean at night, so when our Masters practice is finished as the pool is closing we have women (often young) hosing down the floor, cleaning the bathrooms.We apparently have the same thing. A couple mornings ago, I had just completely undressed in the locker rooms when the male janitor walked in... followed by the female janitor. Everyone looked over at her but she acted like she belonged there and we all went back to changing into our suits.

I went into the men's faculty shower room for my university pool once and a guy was in there with 6 or 7 naked boys that were, I dunno, maybe 6 or 7. He herded them all out, but told one, "You stay here." I'm very nearsitghted, but I was aware that the boy on the other side of the shower room was looking at me with a great deal of curiousity - I had just taken my suit off and was soaping my stuff. I glanced over, I tried to focus my myopic, astigmatic eyes, and then realized the "boy" was girl. I was instantly aware of potential (but admittedly unlikely) legal repercussions for me and hightailed out of there. The headline that popped into my brain was "Missing girl found naked in shower room with naked man." I got out so fast, I had to rinse off when I got home. I don't have kids and I have a European kind of attitude towards nudity, but that still made me uncomfortable. Heck, even if it had been a close friend's daughter and he said "It's OK, she's used to nudity," I would not do that. A stranger? Aside from whatever the girl experienced, the guy who left her there was exposing both himself and me to hellish legal problems.

our pool is located in the county facility and is open to the public. so besides our swimmers there are people 16-99 that use the lockers. we even have co-ed staff that clean at night, so when our Masters practice is finished as the pool is closing we have women (often young) hosing down the floor, cleaning the bathrooms. Okay, but seriously, I have been in hundreds of locker rooms that had a variety of "rules" and "policies". Initially as a naive child and then as an aware teen and now as a jaded adult and eventually as a decrepit old man...the change of perspectives is interesting. What are the best practices? It is open to debate but here you go: 1. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. This puts the responsibility on the parent and partially protects regular people who just happen to be using the shower. 2. An employee should sweep through once an hour. Besides picking up a bit, this coaxes some of the people who like to literally hang out while engaging in extended chitchat that they should either start their workout or leave for the day. 3. All visitors/guests must be signed in with the desk and remain in the company of their member/host. The Free Friday policy of some gyms brings in a lot of homeless people, so they are literally hiding in the locker room which really drives up the ick factor. 4. A sign should be posted encouraging people to report unattended children, videotaping activies, and/or sexual contact to the attendent. This outlines what behavior is truly out of bounds and encourages people to report the real problems. Personally I grew up with spartan concrete facilities that had no a/c or heating, so you literally wanted to change and shower and be done with it. As a result, I have the habit of changing and showering without any trace of modesty, not rushing but also not spending extra time. Now locker rooms are so comfortable and plush, with televisions and magazine racks and even microwaves, that I can see how people get more comfortable spending an extra 20 or 30 minutes to socialize. It is like the gyms want people to hang out in there.

Some idiot was doing naked deep knee bends in the locker room this morning. He was probably creepy and old, but I was doing my best not to look. :afraid: Do you go to the same gym as me? He and his friend -- the one with the eyepatch who does the jumping jacks -- were harmonizing a cappella in the shower today.

The article focuses on girls, but mentions that, while more difficult to determine precisely, boys seem to be hitting puberty earlier as well. Skip

I worried about nakedness in the locker room for about 2 weeks — when I was 10 years old. After that, I hardly ever thought about it. In Canadian schools of that era, from grade 5 on, gym was compulsory, with naked showers to follow, and you just did it and got over it! Coincidentally, I was just googling ocean beach temperatures in Vancouver and came across a notice that as of June 2011, topless bathing is legal on all Vancouver beaches.:banana:

If with the new technologies someone is taking my picture without authorization… well… nowadays can happen everywhere, it is the price of advanced technologies at the hands of “closed” minds :afraid: So are you saying that those that take nude photos in a locker room just have a closed mind with regard to nudity? The price for doing this in the U.S. is a criminal offense.

My local pool has 4 changing rooms. 1 Mens, 1 Womans, 1 Boys, 1 Girls. The Men's changing room is quite fancy and full of naked old men. The Boy's changing room is pretty plain and has much more modest people. I feel like my generation and below (20 yrs old) is much more modest with all of the teachings of sexual harassment and pedophiles and such. My pool in high school also had the 4 changing rooms. If some old, wrinkly, sagging, man happened to walk in of a shower the boys locker room someone would say NOMA. Naked Old Man Alert. You do realize that at some point you'll both have to use the 'Mens' changing room and that you'll also get old?

Think, everywhere nudity is a issue… :blah: Personally could not care less about what others say or think about being nude in areas legally allowed. Body is just that, a body, natural… :) If seeing some parts is offensive at shower rooms for some just close eyes… if youngsters are having problems with their bodies and refuse to see others… that is part of growing up, we should not endorse legal nudity complains, we should talk about it …educate …:) If with the new technologies someone is taking my picture without authorization… well… nowadays can happen everywhere, it is the price of advanced technologies at the hands of “closed” minds :afraid:

most older swimmers walk around in the buff care free while most younger swimmers and some masters (who might have had prudish moms or modesty issues, just a theory) wrap a towel around their waist when they put on their suits or take them off Most of the adults I see doing a deck change are the ones who let their 8-year-old boys run around the ladies locker room. AAAAARRRRGHHH! (Maybe that one belongs in the swim rant thread.)
