1. 2 to 3 snorts of saline shot up the nose after each swim
2. 2 X a day I'm taking a teaspoon of elderberry syrup for building immunity. (you can get it at Whole Foods)
3. I usually get my sinusitis in November, so starting in October through the end of December I'm using Flonase to prevent the problem. The physician told me to start a month before I usually get it because it takes that long for it to work.

This routine has worked for me this year. I'm hoping it continues to work for the rest of my life; I hate sinus infections.

RE: Swimmer's Sinusitis

I had a sinus infection two weeks before the senior Olympics, took an antibiotic that helped. I think a lot of it has to do with the facility and the indoor/outdoor air quality. If you have allergies or asthma probably even more susceptible. My environmental allergy test lights up like a Christmas tree (everything tests positive) and whenever I would tell allergists that the pool made problems worse I basically got the hairy eyebrow. I would come out itchy eyes, itchy nose and sneezing...from an indoor pool with poor air quality. I think that if your passages are inflamed or struggling with other issues poor pool water or air quality can really add to the irritation. I feel like I'm finally at a place where my allergies are under control with a combination of meds. I don't have any problems with any of the pools I swim in anymore. The previous itchy eyeball pool has been torn down because the entire school had ventilation problems too big to handle so I can't say if it would still be a problem. But I walked into an old pool area the other day to observe lessons and I was very itchy after watching for an hour without even going in the pool.
Point being...make sure any other ENT problems are under control and even then you just might have to find a different pool.

RE: Swimmer's Sinusitis

I hate that anyone suffers from this, but am glad I'm not alone. Have you tried a nose plug? That is what worked for me.

I'd have an infection, treat it with antibiotics, and then a few weeks after that was done it'd reappear. It went on for about 9 months and I was absolutely miserable.

I've always been a very allergic person with lots of hayfever so around then I started in with allergy shots. While chlorine is not a true allergen the allergy shots helped to both desensitize me to the pollens, which helped since I swim outdoors, and in general calmed my sinuses down so they didn't react so bad to the chlorine. Since then I haven't had any more sinus infections.

Also when I was having problems a saline nasal rinse seemed to help, kind of like the ocean spray but taken to 11. This is what I used, and while it felt weird at first it did provide relief. My ENT didn't recommend using it forever though as she felt it would dry out my sinuses too much.

www.neilmed.com/.../sinusrinse.php

Obviously there's no guarantee that this will help, but I eventually found relief, hopefully you can too.

Good luck, I feel for you, sinus problems are awful and hard to treat.

I've had terrible debilitating sinus/bronchitis issues in the past, but have been healthy for awhile now. Allergy shots made me worse, and they only work for about 30% of adults. Regularly taking my allergy meds and using a neti pot and saline spray periodically seems to help. I've been dramatically better since we now have no dogs in the house ... that may be the single greatest difference actually.
