Hello Ramjet08-

We follow USMS Rules (Article 302.2.2 Water Conditions) for water temperature, and the Cold Water Temperature Guidelines in the Safety Plan for all USMS sanctioned open water swims. Each Event Director will specify requirements and allowances for wetsuits based on local race conditions in the Event Entry Information.

Unfortunately, the USMS Middle-Distance Open Water National Championship Event (Newport Beach CA) has been CANCELLED due to COVID-19 pandemic budget cuts and reduced lifeguard staffing numbers.

Thank you. I have another question regarding techsuits. I read FINA has approved wetsuits for competition if the water temperature is below 20C (68F). Will USMS do the same?

Hi Ramjet08 - The 2021 USMS Middle-Distance Open Water National Championship, originally scheduled for July 10th in Newport Beach CA, has been "Postponed TBD" and the Event status has now been updated on the USMS OWNC landing page. We should hopefully have more information after June 15th as the State of California continues to re-open. Thank you for your interest.
