Certain cuts (male jammer and brief and female short john) of HydroSpeed 1 can be worn at USA Swim meets because it is a textile only suit that meets FINA's current rules...

While you can wear a older suit in the approved cut at USS meets, you can not set a World Record, qualify for the World Championship or Olympic Team or for world rankings (note: this is not masters). To do this, you must wear a suit on the 2010 FINA list. The reason the HydroSpeed 1 was not submitted for this list is the high cost of the FINA approval process

Here's what USA Swimming has to say

I swim USS meets, too. But I don't see my going for any World nor Olympic records or cuts any time soon. Thanks.

RE: FINIS Tech Suits Only $20!!!!

* The HydroSpeed I falls into the "FINA Approved" category above because the material, styles, and accessories are all approved for use in FINA 2010 competitions. Therefore because the HydroSpeed I suits were developed and manufactured before 2009 and have characteristics which do not raise any issue in regard of new or amended criteria, no 2010 submission was made. Note that since the HydroSpeed I is approved but not on the current 2010 FINA list they cannot be worn to break any FINA World Championships or Olympic records.

So does this mean the Hydrospeed I is approved as long as we're not going for World of Olympic records? Will a USMS official know this?
