C'mon, Kurt. You're gonna let some triathlete out-sprint you at the start? I know you're a distance guy, but get a jump on them and do the kicking yourself. It's not the start that you have to watch out for Kurt at...hitting the "beach" however is a different story and I still have facial lacerations and bruised ribs from my run in with Mr. Dickson at Lake Pleasant. By the way, for anyone looking to get a 4k TT in and not so excited about a dive into Tempe town lake the Ron Johnson SCM meet is going to include one for the first time the weekend of 11/14-16: www.clubassistant.com/.../meet_information.cfm

I think I may have asked before, but I'll ask again. People actually swim in Tempe Town Lake? Yes and they did not emerge with an extra head! There are a bunch of triathlons and open water swims that take place in Town Lake. The City of Tempe closely monitors water quality and is very careful not to hold events if it gets bad. They want to make this a big-time venue for all manner of sporting events. A couple years back they had a big wakeboarding competition and they regularly hold rowing and dragon boat competitions. The other lakes around town have better water quality. My favorite is Lake Pleasant, which has outstanding water. It is a little bit outside of town but it is a great lake for all manner of aquatics activities. Town Lake is not my favorite body of water but it is safe albeit not crystal blue and clear.

I'm sure 99% of triathletes are nice, put there is like 5-10 people in every race I do that absolutely have to prove they belong up front (which position they may be by the end of the race); it is rare when any of these crazed, foot pulling, elbow tossing, freaks are as good a swimmer as they think they are. Yes, David, they do swim in the nastiness. Mark Gill actually had a series of open water swims there in I believe 05 which was nice. They started having less races in the lake as it was rumored it cost thousands of dollars to treat the lake because of pH problems (read Arizona-115 degrees, stagnant water, ?sewage, algae, and teems of microorganisms probably never previously catalogued). This made only big races with lots o' cash (IM Arizona, Soma) only able to afford the pretreatment. You are not allowed to swim there unless there is a sanctioned race. There are lots of better lakes to have races, but none with the trendy tempe commercial area nearby and immediate proximity to town (Lake Pleasant is much superior but about 20 miles outside of peoria); therefore we will continue to swim there (it's really not that bad) and call it open water--"the tempe town lake rough water swim."

This event now has a sanction number (480-0009) so this event is now official. It should appear on the USMS website shortly and the link for sign-up will be made live on the AZ LMSC website in due course. www.azlmsc.org/events.htm The course for this one will run on the East side of the Mill Avenue bridge on a 2000M course. That means the 2.4 mile swim will be two laps of the course. See you all in November for this one!

One week before IM Arizona--nothing says fun, like a smack-down of a bunch of triathletes--gotta watch 'em close though cuz they like to throw a lot of elbows and such. C'mon, Kurt.
